The Board of Certified Safety Professionals® (BCSP®) is now offering the Associate Safety Professional® (ASP10) exam in 2020 outside of the initial beta launch that took place in late 2019.

Every five years, or more often if necessary, the BCSP® revalidates all certification examinations. During the revalidation process, a new blueprint is created that reflects the consensus of the profession as to the key elements a minimally qualified candidate must possess to be deemed competent. In late 2019, the BCSP® updated the ASP® exam with a new content outline and examination blueprint.

Here are the respective outlines for the ASP9 and ASP 10 to showcase the changes:

Domain 2: Safety Management Systems (23%)
Domain 3: Ergonomics (13%)
Domain 4: Fire Prevention and Protection (11%)
Domain 5: Occupational Health (11%)
Domain 6: Environmental Management (15%)
Domain 7: Training, Education, and Communication (9%)

ASP9 vs. ASP10 Domain Changes

Overall, a significant amount of the general concepts identified in the current blueprint carried over to the new blueprint. The new blueprint removes tasks and presents the content in the form of knowledge and skill statements.

Two new domains were added and some of the content in these domains were shifted from existing domains while some were newly added content.

  • Domain 5: Emergency Response Management (ERM)
  • Domain 9: Law and Ethics

Weights (percentages) of most of the existing seven domains decreased.

Weights (percentages) of two domains increased and one domain was expanded.

  • Domain 6 increased in weight with the addition of industrial hygiene concepts.
  • Domain 8 increased in weight and added content focusing on safety culture/climate.
  • Domain 2 was expanded to include new content focused on machine guarding, powered industrial vehicles, and scaffolding.
