confidently pass the CAPA® exam and advance your career in ambulatory perianesthesia nursing.
The American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification, Inc. (ABPANC) offers the Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse (CAPA®) exam. This certification is tailored for registered nurses who specialize in providing care to patients undergoing anesthesia in ambulatory settings. Earning the CAPA® credential highlights your expertise in perianesthesia nursing and dedication to high standards of patient care in the ambulatory setting.
To qualify, candidates must have an active RN license in the United States and at least 1,200 hours of direct clinical experience in perianesthesia (specifically in the post-anesthesia phase I) within the past two years. The CAPA® exam consists of 175 multiple-choice questions (with 25 unscored pretest items) to be completed within 3 hours. Topics covered include patient physiological, behavioral, and cognitive needs, with emphasis on airway management, hemodynamic stability, pain management, and safety during the post-anesthesia phase.
Certification is valid for three years. Recertification can be obtained through continuing education and clinical practice hours or by retaking and passing the exam, ensuring that CAPA®-certified nurses remain up-to-date with the latest evidence-based practices.
