The ANCC Nurse Executive Board Certification (NE-BC®) examination is competency based and provides a valid and reliable assessment of the entry level knowledge and skills of nurses with unit, team, service line, department, or program influence. Typically, these nurses are accountable for a single group of nurses and/or non-nursing staff and focus, in part, on daily operations, staffing, staff development, and individual and group performance. They make day-to-day, tactical decisions and are visible to the workforce.

The exam consists of 150 total questions. This includes 125 scored questions and 25 pretest questions that do not count towards a candidate's score. Candidates have 3 hours to complete the exam.

To be eligible to take the exam, applicants must have:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing
- Current RN license
- Two years or equivalent of full time practice as a registered nurse
- 2,000 hours of experience in a leadership, management or administrative roles with primary responsibility for the daily operations and outcomes within the last 3 years
- 30 continuing education hours in leadership, management or administration within the last three years
