The BCEN CTRN® (Certified Transport Registered Nurse) certification recognizes experienced registered nurses who deliver advanced, evidence-based care during ground transport of critically ill or injured patients. Offered by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN), this credential validates your expertise in managing high-acuity patients in dynamic, resource-limited, and high-pressure transport environments.
Candidates must hold a current, unrestricted RN license. While not required, BCEN strongly recommends at least two years of clinical experience in emergency, critical care, or transport nursing prior to testing.
The 2026 CTRN® exam includes 175 items (150 scored and 25 unscored pretest items) to be completed within 3 hours. The content assesses your knowledge and clinical judgment across four key domains: General Principles of Ground Transport Nursing Practice; Resuscitation Principles; Patient Conditions and Principles of Management; Special Populations. The outline also includes an Advanced Intervention Awareness section, highlighting familiarity with critical procedures and technologies such as mechanical ventilation, ECMO, cardiac pacing, and point-of-care ultrasound.
The CTRN® credential is valid for four years and may be renewed by meeting BCEN’s continuing education or re-examination requirements. Earning the CTRN® demonstrates your commitment to excellence and your ability to deliver safe, expert-level care in ground transport environments.
