If you build, run, or secure workloads in the cloud, the CompTIA Cloud+ certification is a vendor-neutral way to prove you can do it across providers, not just on one platform. The exam covers a lot of ground, from storage tiers and container networking to CI/CD pipelines and DNS failures, so it’s normal to feel a little overwhelmed at first. The good news is that CompTIA publishes exactly what it tests, and a study plan built around that document gives you a clear path to passing on your first try.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the exam format, all six domains of the current CV0-004 exam objectives, the official resources worth downloading, and the questions candidates ask most often.

What Is the CompTIA Cloud+ Exam?

CompTIA Cloud+ is an intermediate-level certification from CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association. It validates the skills to design, deploy, operate, secure, and troubleshoot cloud environments, including public, private, and hybrid clouds.

Unlike a provider-specific exam, Cloud+ doesn’t ask you to memorize one vendor’s console or product names. Instead, it tests concepts that transfer across platforms: service models, availability zones, infrastructure as code, scaling, backups, identity and access management, and structured troubleshooting. CompTIA lists job roles such as systems administrator, network operations specialist, enterprise architect, and security architect on the official Cloud+ page.

What Is the CompTIA Cloud+ Exam Format?

Here is the CV0-004 exam at a glance, based on CompTIA’s Cloud+ certification page and the official exam objectives:

  • Exam code: CV0-004, launched September 24, 2024.
  • Questions: A maximum of 90 questions.
  • Question types: Multiple-choice and performance-based questions (PBQs). PBQs are hands-on tasks, such as dragging items into the right order or configuring settings in a simulated environment.
  • Time: 90 minutes.
  • Passing score: 750 on a scale of 100 to 900.
  • Languages: English and Japanese.
  • Delivery: Pearson VUE, either at a test center or online through OnVUE remote proctoring.
  • Results: You see your result right after you finish the exam.

With up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, you have about a minute per question. PBQs usually take longer than multiple-choice items, so many candidates flag the PBQs, answer the quicker questions first, and come back with the time they’ve banked.

What Content Outline Does the CompTIA Cloud+ Exam Use?

The current exam is based on the CompTIA Cloud+ Certification Exam Objectives (CV0-004). It groups 33 objectives into six domains. The approximate question counts below are our estimates based on CompTIA’s percentages and a 90-question exam.

  • 1.0 Cloud Architecture: 23% (about 21 questions)
  • 2.0 Deployment: 19% (about 17 questions)
  • 3.0 Operations: 17% (about 15 questions)
  • 4.0 Security: 19% (about 17 questions)
  • 5.0 DevOps Fundamentals: 10% (about 9 questions)
  • 6.0 Troubleshooting: 12% (about 11 questions)

Domain 1.0: Cloud Architecture (23%)

This is the largest domain and the foundation for everything else. It asks whether you can pick the right building blocks for a workload and explain the trade-offs in cost, performance, and availability.

  • Use the appropriate service model (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, FaaS) and apply the shared responsibility model.
  • Explain availability concepts such as regions, availability zones, disaster recovery strategies, and multicloud designs.
  • Explain cloud networking, including VPCs, VPNs, load balancers, CDNs, and routing.
  • Compare storage tiers and types, containerization, and virtualization concepts like clustering and affinity.
  • Summarize cost considerations (billing models, metering, tagging, rightsizing), database types, and evolving technologies such as AI/ML and IoT.

What questions look like: A company needs to run code only when a file lands in storage and wants to pay nothing while idle. The best fit is FaaS (serverless), not a VM that runs all day.

Domain 2.0: Deployment (19%)

Deployment covers how workloads get into the cloud and how changes roll out safely.

  • Compare public, private, hybrid, and community deployment models.
  • Implement deployment strategies: blue-green, canary, rolling, and in-place.
  • Summarize cloud migration types and strategies.
  • Use code to deploy resources, including infrastructure as code (IaC), configuration as code (CaC), scripting logic, drift detection, versioning, and JSON/YAML formats.
  • Provision resources that meet storage, performance, security, cost, and availability needs.

Study tip: Be able to read a short JSON or YAML snippet and spot what it does or what’s wrong with it. Syntax-level questions show up in scenario form.

Domain 3.0: Operations (17%)

Operations is day-two work: keeping systems visible, sized correctly, recoverable, and current.

  • Configure observability through logging, tracing, monitoring, and alerting.
  • Configure scaling approaches (triggered, scheduled, manual) and know horizontal versus vertical scaling.
  • Use backup and recovery methods, including backup types, locations, replication, and restore testing.
  • Manage the resource life cycle, from patching and updates to data management and decommissioning.

What questions look like: Traffic spikes every Monday at 9 a.m. A scheduled scaling policy beats a purely load-triggered one because capacity is ready before users arrive.

Domain 4.0: Security (19%)

Security runs through every domain, but this section focuses on protecting identities, data, and workloads.

  • Explain vulnerability management: scanning, identification, assessment, remediation, and CVEs.
  • Compare compliance aspects such as data sovereignty, data classification, and industry standards.
  • Implement identity and access management, including authentication and authorization.
  • Apply best practices like Zero Trust, hardening, encryption, and least privilege.
  • Apply controls (firewalls, IDS/IPS, DLP, endpoint protection) and monitor for suspicious activity and attacks.

Study tip: Watch for data sovereignty clues in a stem, such as a regulation requiring data to stay in one country. They often decide which region or backup location is correct.

Domain 5.0: DevOps Fundamentals (10%)

DevOps is a full domain for the first time on CV0-004. It covers how code moves from a developer’s laptop to production.

  • Explain source control concepts: commits, pushes, pull requests, code review, merges, and branch management.
  • Explain CI/CD pipeline concepts, including build, testing, security, workflow, artifacts, and public or private repositories.
  • Explain system integration, such as event-driven architectures and web services (REST, SOAP, RPC, WebSockets, GraphQL).
  • Explain the purpose of DevOps tools: Ansible, Docker, ELK stack, Git, GitHub Actions, Grafana, Jenkins, Kubernetes, and Terraform.

What questions look like: You’ll often be asked which tool fits a job, such as visualizing metrics (Grafana) versus provisioning infrastructure declaratively (Terraform).

Domain 6.0: Troubleshooting (12%)

Troubleshooting asks you to find the most likely cause of a cloud problem and pick the right fix.

  • Troubleshoot deployment issues such as incompatibility, misconfigurations, outdated definitions, deprecation, outages, resource limits, and regional availability.
  • Troubleshoot network issues, including DHCP, DNS, NTP, NAT, and HTTP service problems, latency, bandwidth, IP addressing, routing, and switching.
  • Troubleshoot security issues like cipher deprecations, authentication and authorization failures, software vulnerabilities, and unauthorized software.

Study tip: When a deployment fails in one region but works in another, consider quotas and regional service availability before assuming a code bug.

How Should You Use the CompTIA Cloud+ Blueprint to Study?

The objectives document is your master checklist. Turn each objective and sub-bullet into a question you can answer without notes, then rate yourself as strong, developing, or weak.

  1. Take a baseline. Answer a mixed set of questions across all six domains before you start reviewing, so you know where you stand.
  2. Weight your time. Cloud Architecture, Deployment, and Security together make up 61% of the exam. Weak spots there cost the most points.
  3. Map every miss. Tag each missed question to an objective number (for example, 3.3 Backup and recovery). Patterns show up quickly.
  4. Don’t skip the smaller domains. DevOps Fundamentals is only 10%, but it’s newer and full of tool names that are easy to mix up.
  5. Get hands-on. CompTIA’s objectives suggest access to cloud provider trial environments, a hypervisor, and CLI tools. Even a few hours in a free-tier account makes PBQs feel familiar.
