The LEED Green Associate v5 exam includes revised content related to carbon, resilience, water performance, equitable development, materials, accessibility, inclusion, and occupant well-being.
What Is LEED?
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a green-building rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The U.S. Green Building Council develops and maintains the LEED rating systems. Green Business Certification Inc. administers project certification and LEED professional credentials.
LEED rating systems apply to projects such as buildings, interiors, neighborhoods, residences, cities, and communities. LEED professional credentials apply to individuals.
A project may earn one of four certification levels:
| Certification Level | Points Required |
|---|---|
| Certified | 40 to 49 points |
| Silver | 50 to 59 points |
| Gold | 60 to 79 points |
| Platinum | 80 or more points |
Projects must satisfy all applicable prerequisites and earn enough points through optional credits to reach a certification level.
What Is the LEED Green Associate Credential?

What Types of Questions Are on the LEED Green Associate Exam?
The exam assesses knowledge at three cognitive levels:
Recall
Recall questions ask you to recognize or remember factual information from the exam references. You may need to identify a definition, an organization, a rating system, a certification step, or a green-building strategy.
Application
Application questions present a new situation and ask you to use a familiar principle or process. You may need to select the strategy that best supports a project goal or determine which action applies at a particular phase.
Analysis
Analysis questions require you to examine several elements and determine how they interact. You may need to compare strategies, identify project synergies, or evaluate which response best addresses multiple sustainability priorities.
Effective preparation requires more than memorizing terms, tables, or acronyms. You should be able to apply LEED principles to realistic project scenarios.

How to Build a LEED Green Associate Study Plan
1. Start With the Eight Domains
Use the official domain list as a coverage checklist. Do not rely on the chapter structure of an older v4 study book.
2. Allocate Time by Weight and Weakness
LEED Process and Energy and Atmosphere have the most scored questions. However, Materials and Resources and Indoor Environmental Quality are also substantial domains. Adjust your time based on both domain size and your starting knowledge.
3. Learn the LEED Process Chronologically
Map the sequence from rating-system selection through registration, documentation, review, certification, and appeals. Connect each step to the responsible organization and project team role.
4. Study Relationships Across Domains
Green-building strategies rarely affect only one category. For example:
- Building orientation may affect energy use, daylight, heat, and occupant comfort.
- Material selection may affect embodied carbon, waste, ecological health, and indoor air quality.
- Rainwater capture may affect site resilience and water use.
- Location may affect transportation emissions, accessibility, and community impact.
5. Use Retrieval Practice
Quiz yourself regularly instead of only rereading. Retrieving information from memory strengthens retention and helps reveal what you do not yet understand.
6. Practice Application and Analysis
Use scenario-based questions that require you to select a strategy, identify a project responsibility, or evaluate the relationship between multiple building systems.
7. Review Every Answer Explanation
Review why the correct answer is best and why each alternative is less appropriate. This is especially important when several choices describe valid sustainability strategies, but only one addresses the project’s stated goal.
How to Approach LEED Green Associate Questions
When answering a scenario, ask:
- What is the project trying to accomplish?
- Which LEED domain applies?
- What phase of the project or certification process is described?
- Which organization or team member is responsible?
- Is the question asking about a prerequisite, credit, policy, or general strategy?
- Which strategy addresses the root problem?
- Which option creates the most relevant project synergy?
- What must happen before another otherwise appropriate action?
- Which option best fits the exact question being asked?
LEED Green Associate Exam-Day Tips
- Confirm that the name on your registration exactly matches the name on your accepted identification.
- Complete the Prometric system check before a remotely proctored exam.
- Review the testing-space requirements before testing online.
- Arrive or check in early enough to complete exam procedures.
- Answer every question because unscored questions are not identified.
- Flag difficult questions and return to them if time remains.
- Read for words such as first, best, most appropriate, and primary.
- Remember that testing time does not stop if you take an authorized break at a testing center.
- Do not leave the webcam’s field of view during a remotely proctored exam.
Maintaining the LEED Green Associate Credential
The LEED Green Associate credential must be renewed every two years.
Credential holders must earn and report 15 continuing education hours during each two-year reporting period. At least 3 of those hours must be LEED-specific.
Once the continuing education requirement is satisfied, the credential holder must complete the renewal process through the USGBC Credentials Dashboard.
