The AACN CCRN® (Pediatric) exam is intended for nurses who provide direct care to critically ill pediatric patients. This certification, offered by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), is a mark of excellence in pediatric critical care nursing, opening doors to specialized roles in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) and other high-acuity pediatric settings.
To be eligible, you need an active RN or APRN license and must meet specific clinical practice requirements: 1) A minimum of 1,750 hours of direct care for acutely/critically ill pediatric patients within the last two years, with 875 hours in the most recent year, or 2) At least five years of experience, with a minimum of 2,000 hours of direct care, including 144 hours accrued in the most recent year.
The exam consists of 150 questions, with 125 scored and 25 used for statistical purposes. The test duration is 3 hours. A score of 83 correct answers out of the 125 scored questions is required to pass. Once certified, your CCRN credential is valid for three years, after which you must renew it through continuing education or re-examination.
