Targeted test prep to help you confidently pass the SCRN® exam and advance your stroke nursing career.
The American Board of Neuroscience Nursing (ABNN) offers the Stroke Certified Registered Nurse (SCRN®) exam. This credential is designed for registered nurses who specialize in stroke care across the continuum—from emergency response through rehabilitation. Earning the SCRN® certification demonstrates advanced knowledge and a commitment to excellence in the field of stroke nursing.
To be eligible, candidates must hold a current, active RN license in the United States or Canada and have at least one year of full-time (or equivalent) experience in stroke care. This includes practice in settings such as emergency departments, stroke units, intensive care units, rehabilitation centers, or other clinical environments where stroke patients are treated.
The SCRN® exam consists of 170 multiple-choice questions (including 20 unscored pretest items), and candidates have 3 hours to complete it. The exam covers five core content domains: Primary and Secondary Stroke Prevention, Stroke Pathophysiology, Acute Care Management, Postacute Care, and Systems and Quality of Care.
Certification is valid for five years. Recertification can be achieved through a combination of continuing education and professional practice hours or by retaking the exam, ensuring that SCRN®-certified nurses maintain current, evidence-informed clinical expertise in stroke nursing.
