confidently pass the CPAN® exam and elevate your post-anesthesia nursing career.
The American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification, Inc. (ABPANC) offers the Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN®) exam. This certification is designed for registered nurses who specialize in caring for patients emerging from anesthesia. Earning the CPAN® credential demonstrates expertise in post-anesthesia care and a commitment to excellence in perianesthesia nursing practice.
To be eligible, candidates must hold an active RN license in the United States and have at least 1,200 hours of direct clinical experience in perianesthesia (specifically postanesthesia phase I) within the two years prior to application. The CPAN® exam includes 175 multiple-choice questions (25 unscored pretest items), and candidates have 3 hours to complete the exam. Topics span domains such as physiological, behavioral, and cognitive needs of the patient, including airway management, hemodynamic stability, pain management, and safety in the post-anesthesia phase.
Certification is valid for three years. Recertification can be achieved through continued education and practice hours or by successfully passing the exam again, ensuring that CPAN®-certified nurses maintain current, evidence-based clinical competence.
