The ASWB BSW (Bachelor of Social Work) exam is designed for entry-level social workers who have earned a BSW degree from an accredited program. Passing this exam allows graduates to pursue licensure and practice under supervision in settings such as schools, healthcare facilities, and community agencies.

Beginning August 2026, the updated exam will include approximately 122 multiple-choice questions (110 scored and 12 pretest) administered over four hours. The blueprint has been streamlined into three content areas, with a stronger emphasis on applied knowledge, ethical decision-making, and professional judgment. Many questions will feature three answer options, with some four-option items remaining.

Candidates must graduate from an accredited BSW program and meet their jurisdiction’s requirements for eligibility. Passing scores are determined through ASWB’s psychometric process rather than a fixed number of correct answers, and licensure typically requires renewal every two to three years with continuing education.
