Prepare for the RT exam and advance your
respiratory care career.
Prepare for the NBRC Respiratory Therapy (RT) Examination with Pocket Prep. Expert-written practice questions and detailed explanations help you connect respiratory care concepts to patient assessment, treatment decisions, and exam-day confidence.
Launching January 4, 2027, the RT Examination provides a single-exam pathway to the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials. Achieving the lower passing score earns the CRT credential; reaching the higher passing score earns the RRT credential. Candidates have four hours to answer 185 multiple-choice questions, including 160 scored questions and 25 unscored pretest questions.
The exam assesses two complementary areas. Breadth of Knowledge includes 100 scored questions covering Patient Data, Management of Devices and Patient Safety Procedures, and Initiation and Modification of Interventions. Depth of Clinical Judgment includes 60 scored questions focused on gathering and interpreting information and deciding when to initiate, adjust, continue, or discontinue care. These questions address adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients in hospital and community settings, connecting foundational knowledge to practical respiratory care decisions.

Starting January 4, 2027, the NBRC’s new Respiratory Therapy (RT) Examination replaces the TMC and separate CSE pathway for new candidates. One exam assesses both knowledge and clinical judgment, with a lower passing score earning the CRT credential and a higher passing score earning the RRT credential.
