The CCE (Center for Credentialing & Education) Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) is a comprehensive exam designed for graduate students in counselor education programs. Universities often use the CPCE as an exit exam to assess students' mastery of the counseling curriculum before graduation.
The CPCE consists of 160 multiple-choice questions, covering eight core areas of counseling (CACREP), including human growth and development, social and cultural diversity, helping relationships, group work, career development, assessment and testing, research and program evaluation, and professional orientation and ethical practice. There are 20 items per CACREP area, with 17 scored items and three pretest items. The exam duration is 3 hours and 45 minutes. To be eligible, candidates must be enrolled in a graduate program in counseling. Passing scores are determined by each institution but typically require answering approximately 95 to 110 questions correctly. The CPCE is not a licensure exam but a significant step toward becoming a licensed counselor.
