The ASWB LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) is designed for social workers seeking independent clinical licensure. It assesses the ability to diagnose, treat, and provide psychotherapy services in settings such as private practice, hospitals, mental health clinics, and community agencies.
Beginning August 2026, the updated exam will include approximately 122 multiple-choice questions (110 scored and 12 pretest) administered over four hours. The streamlined blueprint features three content areas and emphasizes applied clinical knowledge, ethical decision-making, and professional judgment. Many questions will include three answer options, with some four-option items remaining.
Eligibility typically requires an accredited MSW degree and 2–3 years of supervised post-graduate clinical experience, depending on jurisdiction. Passing scores are set through ASWB’s psychometric process rather than a fixed number of correct answers, and licensure renewal generally requires continuing education every two to three years.
