The current exam is aligned with LEED v5, the newest version of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system. LEED v5 gives greater attention to three overarching impact areas:

What Is LEED?

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a green-building rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The U.S. Green Building Council develops and maintains the LEED rating systems. Green Business Certification Inc. administers project certification and LEED professional credentials.

LEED rating systems apply to projects such as buildings, interiors, neighborhoods, residences, cities, and communities. LEED professional credentials apply to individuals.

A project may earn one of four certification levels:

What Is the LEED Green Associate Credential?

LEED Green Associate is the foundational LEED professional credential. It demonstrates current knowledge of green-building concepts and the LEED process.

LEED Green Associate Eligibility Requirements

The LEED Green Associate exam does not require a specific degree or amount of professional experience.

GBCI recommends that candidates have exposure to LEED and green-building concepts through education, volunteering, or work experience before taking the exam.

To be eligible, candidates must:

  • Agree to GBCI’s Disciplinary and Exam Appeals Policy
  • Agree to the credential-maintenance requirements
  • Obtain parental or guardian consent if under age 18

LEED Green Associate v5 Exam Timeline

The LEED Green Associate v5 beta exam launched on April 28, 2026. The former LEED v4 exam is no longer available.

The v5 beta process includes:

  • Data collection phase: April 28 through June 30, 2026
  • Testing-only phase: July through September 2026
  • Expected final v5 exam: October 2026

These dates are estimates and may change based on beta participation and the time required to analyze the exam.

Candidates who take the beta exam do not receive an immediate score. They receive a notice confirming that the exam was completed. Scores are released after GBCI analyzes the exam data and establishes the passing standard.

Once the final LEED Green Associate v5 exam becomes available, candidates taking the final version are expected to receive results immediately after completing the exam.

LEED Green Associate Exam Format

  • Scored questions: 85
  • Unscored questions: 15
  • Testing time: Two hours
  • Total appointment time: Approximately two hours and 20 minutes, including exam procedures
  • Answer options: One correct answer per question

The unscored questions are distributed randomly throughout the exam and are not identified. Answer every question as though it contributes to your score.

You may skip questions, flag them for review, and change answers while time remains.

What Types of Questions Are on the LEED Green Associate Exam?

The exam assesses knowledge at three cognitive levels:

Recall

Recall questions ask you to recognize or remember factual information from the exam references. You may need to identify a definition, an organization, a rating system, a certification step, or a green-building strategy.

Application

Application questions present a new situation and ask you to use a familiar principle or process. You may need to select the strategy that best supports a project goal or determine which action applies at a particular phase.

Analysis

Analysis questions require you to examine several elements and determine how they interact. You may need to compare strategies, identify project synergies, or evaluate which response best addresses multiple sustainability priorities.

Effective preparation requires more than memorizing terms, tables, or acronyms. You should be able to apply LEED principles to realistic project scenarios.

4. Study Relationships Across Domains

Green-building strategies rarely affect only one category. For example:

LEED Green Associate Exam-Day Tips

  • Confirm that the name on your registration exactly matches the name on your accepted identification.
  • Complete the Prometric system check before a remotely proctored exam.
  • Review the testing-space requirements before testing online.
  • Arrive or check in early enough to complete exam procedures.
  • Answer every question because unscored questions are not identified.
  • Flag difficult questions and return to them if time remains.
  • Read for words such as first, best, most appropriate, and primary.
  • Remember that testing time does not stop if you take an authorized break at a testing center.
  • Do not leave the webcam’s field of view during a remotely proctored exam.

Maintaining the LEED Green Associate Credential

The LEED Green Associate credential must be renewed every two years.

Credential holders must earn and report 15 continuing education hours during each two-year reporting period. At least 3 of those hours must be LEED-specific.

Once the continuing education requirement is satisfied, the credential holder must complete the renewal process through the USGBC Credentials Dashboard.
