Thinking about becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)? You’re in the right place. Whether you’re switching careers, fresh out of school, or just curious about where to start in the field of behavior analysis, the RBT credential is a clear, supportive pathway to a meaningful career.

And we’re here to walk you through it—step by step.

Step 1: Make Sure You’re Eligible

Before anything else, check that you meet these basic requirements:

  • You’re at least 18 years old
  • You have a high school diploma or GED
  • You can pass a background check (within 180 days of applying)

Step 2: Complete Your 40-Hour Training

This is where the learning really begins. You’ll take a BACB-compliant training course that introduces you to the foundational principles of ABA, ethical practices, and the skills you’ll use every day as an RBT.

Step 3: Pass the RBT Competency Assessment

Next, a certified behavior analyst will observe and evaluate your ability to perform key tasks. Think of this as a friendly skills check—it ensures you’re ready to support clients safely and effectively.

Step 4: Apply Through the BACB

Now that you’ve trained and been assessed, it’s time to make it official. You’ll create an account on the BACB website and submit your documentation. Once approved, you’ll receive authorization to schedule your exam.

Step 5: Take (and Pass!) the RBT Exam

You’ve worked hard—now it’s time to prove your knowledge. The RBT exam includes 75 multiple-choice questions and takes about 90 minutes. With the right prep and resources (hello, Pocket Prep!), you can walk into that test center feeling confident.

Step 6: Start Changing Lives

Once you pass, you’re officially certified! From there, you’ll begin working under supervision, applying everything you’ve learned in real-life settings. You’ll also renew your certification annually to stay current and effective in your role.
