Test Your RBT® Skills: Which ABA Reinforcement Strategy Applies?
Reinforcement is a foundational concept in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and understanding it is key to passing the Registered Behavior Technician® exam and succeeding in the field. But let’s be real—figuring out which type of reinforcement fits a given scenario can be tricky.
Let’s sharpen your skills with real-world RBT® practice scenarios. For each one, you’ll test your ability to identify the correct reinforcement strategy—positive, negative, or none at all. It’s a great way to prep for the exam and build your confidence in applying ABA principles on the job.
What Is Reinforcement?
Reinforcement is a process used in ABA to increase the likelihood of a behavior happening again. It comes in two main types: positive reinforcement (adding something desirable) and negative reinforcement (removing something undesirable). Understanding which type to use—and when—is key to effective behavior intervention.
How to Practice Reinforcement Procedures
Below are sample scenarios similar to what you might see on the RBT® exam or in real-world practice. For each one, think about:
- What behavior occurred?
- What happened immediately after?
- Did the outcome increase the behavior in the future?
RBT® Scenario 1: Positive Reinforcement
- Scenario: Every time Max puts his toys away without being asked, his therapist gives him a sticker. Max now puts his toys away more often.
- Answer: This is positive reinforcement. A reward (sticker) was added to increase the behavior.
RBT® Scenario 2: Negative Reinforcement
- Scenario: Lily screams during math time. When she does, the teacher sends her to a quiet area. Over time, Lily screams more frequently during math.
- Answer: This is negative reinforcement. The removal of the math task strengthens the escape behavior.
RBT® Scenario 3: Not Reinforcement
- Scenario: Jason claps his hands, and nothing happens. Over time, he stops clapping.
- Answer: This is not reinforcement. Since the behavior decreased, this could be an example of extinction.
Reinforcement Tips for RBT® Exam Prep
- Reinforcement increases behavior. If the behavior decreases, it’s likely not reinforcement.
- Focus on what happens immediately after the behavior, not what happens later.
- Know the difference between reinforcement and bribery—timing matters!
Try writing your own scenarios or reviewing them with a study group. The more you practice identifying reinforcement procedures in different situations, the easier it becomes to apply them correctly during the exam—and in real life.
