The GACE® (Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators) is the state-required certification exam for educators in Georgia, administered by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC). The GACE® exams are designed to assess the knowledge and skills of prospective teachers.
  • Mathematics: This section tests mathematical knowledge and skills expected to be possessed by educators at the early stages of their careers. Topics include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. The assessment focuses on problem-solving, understanding mathematical concepts, and applying these concepts in various contexts.
  • Reading: The reading section assesses comprehension and interpretation skills. It includes passages from a variety of genres and content areas, requiring test-takers to analyze texts, draw inferences, and understand central themes and ideas. This section aims to evaluate the ability to read critically and understand complex materials, which is essential for educators in any subject area.
  • Writing: This part evaluates written communication skills, including grammar, usage, and the ability to organize and express ideas clearly. Test-takers may be asked to respond to prompts that require persuasive or expository writing, demonstrating their ability to construct coherent arguments and narratives. Attention to detail, structure, and clarity is assessed, along with the mechanics of writing.
Each exam typically consists of multiple-choice questions and, in some cases, constructed-response items. Test lengths and formats vary depending on the specific exam, but most are computer-based and take between 2 to 4 hours to complete. The passing scores for the GACE® assessments are determined by the Professional Standards Commission (PSC) of Georgia and can vary depending on the specific test.

For the Program Admission Assessment, which includes the Mathematics, Reading, and Writing sections, a passing score is typically set at a scaled score of 250 for each section. However, candidates have the option to qualify by achieving a total combined score of 750 across all three sections, allowing for some flexibility in individual section scores. GACE® scores are used for certification purposes, and once certified, teachers must renew their credentials every five years by completing continuing education requirements.
