The CBEST® (California Basic Educational Skills Test) is a standardized test required by the states of California and Oregon for individuals seeking credentials in teaching, school administration, and other educational roles. The CBEST® is designed to assess basic proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics, ensuring that educators have the foundational skills necessary to effectively teach and perform other educational duties. The test is divided into three sections:

Reading (095): This section consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that evaluate a test-taker's ability to understand and analyze written information. The questions cover a range of topics and assess skills such as identifying main ideas, critical analysis, and understanding sequences of events or logical arguments within various types of texts. This test section is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Mathematics (096): Comprising 50 multiple-choice questions, this section tests basic mathematical skills and concepts in areas such as arithmetic, algebra, measurement, and statistics. Questions may involve problem-solving, understanding mathematical concepts, and applying mathematical reasoning to real-life scenarios. The use of a calculator is not permitted in this section. This test section is 2 hours.

Writing (097): The writing section includes two essay questions. One prompt asks the test-taker to analyze a given situation or statement, requiring an argumentative or persuasive response. The other prompt requires a narrative or descriptive response, often asking the test-taker to recount a personal experience. This section assesses the ability to organize and express ideas clearly in written form, with attention to grammar, punctuation, and spelling. This test section is 1 hour and 30 minutes. *Pocket Prep does not offer this section in its test prep.
CBEST Information
Each section costs $30, and candidates must register and pay for each section separately. A total score of 123 for all 3 sections is required to pass.
