What does an NITC Journey Level Plumber do?
NITC Journey Level Plumbers demonstrate journey level competence in blueprint reading, jobsite safety, and the practical installation, repair, and service of plumbing systems.
This work can include the construction, installation, alteration, repair, service, and maintenance of new or existing systems used for:
- Potable water
- Sewage
- Waste and vent systems
- Gas piping
Journey level plumbers may work in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. A qualified plumber may perform this work independently or supervise others.
Professionals at this level are also expected to understand:
- Plumbing terminology and definitions
- Cross-connections, back-siphonage, and backflow
- Water heaters
- Liquefied petroleum gas
- Storm drainage
- Plumbing fixtures
- Indirect waste
- Firestop protection
- Trade-related math and basic physics

How to qualify for the NITC Journey Level Plumber exam
Candidates are expected to be experienced trades professionals who have completed a United Association training program or an equivalent program.
To qualify, candidates must document at least four years of experience installing plumbing systems. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program or employer documentation may be used to verify the required experience.
Because plumbing licensing and certification requirements can vary by location, candidates should also review the requirements that apply in their state or local jurisdiction.
What is on the NITC Journey Level Plumber exam?
According to the NITC Candidate Information Bulletin for Certification Exams (effective February 11, 2026), the Journey Level Plumber exam is based on the 2021 edition of the Uniform Plumbing Code.
The exam is open book and contains 100 multiple-choice questions. Candidates have two and a half hours to complete it and must answer at least 75 questions correctly to earn the required passing score of 75%. The 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code is permitted during the examination.
NITC Journey Level Plumber exam content
The exam is divided evenly among four categories:
- General Knowledge of the Uniform Plumbing Code — 25%
Covers knowledge and application of the plumbing code across the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems. - Sizing Drainage, Waste, and Vent Systems — 25%
Covers the proper sizing and configuration of drainage, waste, and vent systems. - Sizing Water Supply and Distribution — 25%
Covers the sizing and distribution of potable-water systems. - Sizing Fuel Piping — 25%
Covers the sizing and installation of gas and fuel-piping systems.
What happens after the exam?
An NITC-approved proctor administers the examination. Candidates receive a pass-or-fail result in writing from NITC, the training agency, or the association that requested the examination.
Candidates who do not earn a passing score may retake the exam at the next scheduled examination. Retesting is available through NITC offices or a Prometric testing center, and a re-examination fee applies.
How long is the NITC Journey Level Plumber certification valid?
The NITC Journey Level Plumber certification is valid for 5 years from the date of issuance. To recertify, certification holders must complete a 25-question, non-proctored, open-book examination. They must answer at least 17 questions correctly, equivalent to a passing score of 68%.
The recertification exam should be completed within 30 days of the certification’s expiration date. NITC sends additional registration information approximately three months before the certification expires.
