The organization offering the exam has changed its name from the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) to the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE). The exam itself has also changed names from Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) to the Certification Examination for Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES). This means that what was formerly referred to as the NCBDE CDE exam is now called the CBDCE CDCES exam.
The Detailed Content Outline (DCO) remains the same from July 1, 2019. With the aforementioned changes, the CBDCE released a new DCO for 2020.
CDCES Exam Questions
The exam will feature 200 multiple-choice questions with a total testing time of four (4) hours. Of the 200 questions, 25 are pretest questions that are not scored. Pretest questions are included to determine how well these questions will perform before they are used on the scored portion of the examination. The pretest questions cannot be distinguished from those that will be scored, so it is important for a candidate to answer all questions. A candidate’s score, however, is based solely on the 175 scored questions. Performance on pretest questions does not affect a candidate’s score.
